Course Description

The purpose of this course is to lay a groundwork for the study of modern Chinese. The course will provide instruction in all 4 language skills of aurally understanding, speaking, reading and writing. While the learning of sentence patterns is a major component of the course, efforts will be made to help students handle simple tasks such as discussing daily routines, asking for and giving simple directions, shopping, talking on the phone, reading and writing notes and letters.

Activities designed for the course include both deductive and inductive lectures on grammatical constructions and cultural conventions as they relate to the language. In addition, intensive drills on sounds, tones, vocabulary and sentence patterns in meaningful contexts will be used in order for the students to communicate appropriately and accurately in authentic contexts. For the reading and writing tracks, emphasis will be placed on the acquisition of character recurring components in order to systematically improve students Chinese orthographic awareness. A daily grading system will be employed. On successful completion of Stage 1, there will be the opportunity to progress to Stage 2.

As this is an accredited course you have the option to take the Chinese Stage 1 continuous assessments representing 200 hours of student effort over two semesters. Upon successful completion you will be awarded 20 credit points at SCQF Level 7.

As a language student you might be interested in our Film Club which meets virtually 4 times per semester. More information will be made available at the beginning of semester.

Once enrolled, students will be emailed to set up their virtual learning account called My Dundee. Upon completion of the matriculation task (all details will be emailed) students will have access to course materials, updates and the University of Dundee library! A University of Dundee student card can also be issued once a photo is sent to the Enquiry Centre.
