Course Description

Japanese is often considered to be a difficult language to learn. It employs a different writing system and relies heavily on cultural context and understanding.

Whilst it may appear daunting, our highly structured course aims to break this down to manageable lessons, that will allow you to immerse yourself in one of the world’s richest cultures.

Many find that speaking Japanese is much simpler than initially anticipated as it is extremely easy to pronounce Japanese and the grammar is more straightforward than English. What is very different from English is the way that Japanese is written. Learning the Japanese writing system does not necessarily have to be a struggle however, as it is ultimately a memory exercise, and once you have the right strategies, it is easy to achieve.

Whether you are a fan of anime, manga, sushi or just want to know more about the country that brought us karate and Hello Kitty, learning Japanese can be hugely rewarding.

The course is taught by a qualified and experienced tutor following a communicative approach, to allow you to build and develop the basics to succeed from beginning to fluency.

On successful completion of Stage 1 (Introductory), there will be the opportunity to progress to Stage 2 (Lower Intermediate).

As this is an accredited course you have the option to take the Japanese Stage 1 continuous assessments representing 200 hours of student effort over two semesters. Upon successful completion you will be awarded 20 credit points at SCQF Level 7.

As a language student you might be interested in our Film Club which meets virtually 4 times per semester. More information will be made available at the beginning of semester.

Once enrolled, students will be emailed to set up their virtual learning account called My Dundee. Upon completion of the matriculation task (all details will be emailed) students will have access to course materials, updates and the University of Dundee library! A University of Dundee student card can also be issued once a photo is sent to the Enquiry Centre.
